Retired Mother and Grandmother

Every mother has a unique story of how they became a mom and the journey that followed. In this series, we will be sharing the stories of mothers from all walks of life and through all ages. Each story is a testament to the strength, love, and resilience of mothers everywhere.

Meet Pheng, a remarkable mother, grandmother and retired lady at 80 years of age. She has experienced life's highs and lows, and in this series, we will share her story of motherhood and the impact it has had on her family.

Pheng became a mother at the tender age of 23, and unfortunately, she lost her husband at the young age of 30. Overnight, she became a single mother of three daughters, one of whom was growing in her womb. It was not easy, and there were many ups and downs along the way. However, 50 years later, it is clear that the good memories have triumphed over the bad times as Pheng shares that her journey of motherhood has been nothing but pleasant.

Pheng acknowledges that without the support of her parents and in-laws, she would not have been able to raise her daughters. The saying "it takes a village to raise your kids" definitely has its grounds.

Her daughter, Lee Yen, shares that although they had a lot of freedom growing up, her mother was also firm. If they did something wrong, they were held accountable and punished for it. Pheng instilled the values of what is right and wrong in her daughters, and emphasized the importance of giving their best effort, regardless of the outcome.

The most rewarding part of being a mother, according to Pheng, is the love that she shares with her children. She believes that every mother wishes to see their children succeed in life and have a happy family. However, being a mother also has its challenges. Pheng found it difficult to balance her time between her children and work, but she tried to give them as much independence as possible. She allowed them to fail and make their own decisions, while ensuring that the time spent with them was of high quality.

Lee Yen adds that her mother's busy work schedule allowed them to think independently and take responsibility for their actions. They had to make decisions and live with the consequences, which helped to build their character. She believes that sometimes, leaving children on their own and letting them figure things out can be beneficial in the long run.

"We have to make sure that they are allowed to fail and make their own decisions" ~ Pheng Beh

Pheng's upbringing had a significant impact on how she raised her own children. Her parents were strict but loving, and they ensured that their children were held accountable for their actions. Pheng passed on this virtue to her daughters, and Lee Yen continues to instill the same values in her own children.

But perhaps the most significant influence that Pheng has had on her family is her unconditional love. It knows no boundaries, and she showers her children, sons-in-law, and grandchildren with the same kind of love. Her love is never-ending and comes with no strings attached.

Pheng's story is a testament to the strength, love, and resilience of mothers everywhere. Despite life's challenges, she persevered and raised three beautiful daughters who continue to pass on her values to their own children. Her story is heartwarming and inspiring, and it reminds us of the power of a mother's love.
